We started out calling him Bob the White, after a server that had broken and then risen from the dead on spare parts and duct tape. Then the CEO suggested Bob Dobbs instead. Bob Dobbs is the central figure of a parody religion called the Church of the SubGenius, and fifty years of accumulated lore meant every model we tried already knew who he was. We got a fully formed personality for free.
A snarky Discord bot is an odd hire for a medical device company. It works under a Quality Management System where there is no room for a hallucination and no important context can live inside the agent. So Bob got a strict division of labour. His job is to reason and to route. The data that matters lives in the QMS, never in him.
Personality and correctness turned out not to be in tension at all. They reinforce each other. A team can let itself get attached to an agent precisely because the agent is trustworthy underneath the jokes. The rigor is what makes the character safe to love.
